My outfit 7th Comm. Bn., Comm. Support Co. went to Viet Nam in March of 1966. I opted to stay with my TAD unit - the military police in 29 Palms. Where did my unit end up going? I thought it was Da Nang. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks.

Hey,
I don't know about the months before, but when I got there in August, 68, they were at Hill 34, on the edge of Da Nang.

I’m not 100% sure but I believe CSC went to Chu Lai. I was in Radio Relay at 29 Palms in 1966 and we left for Chu Lai in May via the USS Ogden. We were welcomed there by the Wire Platoon who had left 29 Palms in April 1966.

PS. Did you know Kent Hoover (Hooch)? He went TAD to the MPs as we left.

Just found this site and read the questions about 7th Comm during the time I served. I am Corporal Bill Harris and I along with about four other Marines were the first replacements to be assigned to 7th Comm in July, 1966. I did my entire 13+ months as a Radio Relay Operator. When I first arrived we were on the beach at Chu Lai for a few months and finally got hooches up on the hill. The battalion was based at Chu Lai throughout my tour of duty. I left RVN on 10 Aug 67. I was told by Lt Col Clelland that the battaloin was heading north to Phu Bai the next day. I lost all contact with everybody after that. What happened to the guys after I left. By the way; as things that go around, come around. I rotated back to 7th Comm former home... 29 Palms. I have no idea what I did wrong but that was no place to enjoy life. I look forward to hearing from some of the guys I served with.

Hey guys, I don't see either of you on the roster. It is through the roster that you will receive info on the reunion next year and also you can get a copy to find your own buddies. To be place on the roster and get a copy, please contact me, Dave Haage by e-mail at haage@insightbb.com or call 309-221-4740. I have a form I'll send you to fill out and return.
By the way, welcome aboard. I was a replacement myself going to Veitnam late '67 and leaveing in Dec. of '68. We're all just trying to reconnect.

i think harris has it pretty well right, concerning the whereabouts of 7th comm. bn. in nam, 66. i got to chulai in sept. 66, was with headquarter comm. co. wire section. a few months later got t.a.d. to 7th comm. wire platoon and worked the switchboards for the duration of my time there. rotated in oct. 67. by this time most or all of the 7thcomm had moved up to danang, leaving the commo stuff in chulai to the army guys i think. met some of my fellow switchboard ops. buddies at 7thcomm. reunion a coupla years ago in las vegas. i gotta say, for a coupla old geezers, we all looked pretty d**n good. semper fi

I joined Comm Support Company in 1971, and helped pack them up and ship the gear to Hawaii. We left in June 1971, and then I was discharged
The unit was then at FLC in Danang, with Radio Relay at Hill 327 and 244.

Thanks Crainhullinger. I don't regret my decision to stay at 29 Palms but sure wish I could have been with my buds. I was due to get out in September of 1966 and they went over in March of that same year. It just didn't seem right with that little time left to go over and risk my life for that short of time, although it would have been worth it for my brothers. Semper Fi on this our time of year.

Was with manpack section, radio platoon when I left 29 Palms fro Nam in 66 on the Okanogogn. We stopped for 7 or 9 days on Hawiai and hit a tythingy on the way over. Had tents at Chu Lia, then moved into hooches on the hill. Left Nam just as 7th Comm was moving to Danang, A week before I left Chu Lia for the Sates, the army's 196th took control of Chu Lia.

Regarding Dennis Starling's post: I was a radio tech with you all on the Okanogon as well. That "tythingy" was a typhoon that we went through somewhere between the Phillipines and Nam. I remember a lot of Marines seasick in their racks, puking in their helmets. I think at least one jeep or truck got loose in the hold and I could hear it banging around. Does anyone remember that you could go up to the ship's bridge and look out on the ocean and see wave tops that you had to look UP at? What a ride!

We went from 29 Palms to Long Beach, to Pearl and on to Chu Lai. We hit a Typhone that delayed us a couple days. That turned out to save us from being attached when we were moving in to our first location We could see the firefight from the ship our first night in country. We had a lot of sea sick Marines on that ship. We had challenged the Navy on board to a target shoot with the 40mm gun and had to cancel due to the Typhone. Dan Elliott Motor T
