I was wondering if this board was limited to Vietnam Era participants only?
I was with 7th Comm., RR&C, RR, on Okinawa - at both Camp Schwab and Camp Hansen, 1971-1972. Too late for you guys?

Jim, I was with RR & Const Co. RR plt 7th Comm at Camp Schwab in 1971. I remember a CPl. Jimmy Bedeau aka 'Budda', a L/cpl Martz, L/cpl. Berscheid, L/cpl Stone, a cpl. that was actually an Egyptian national and also a chemical engineer, Lcpl Helmezi, Cpl Fredrickson, Lt. Sommerville who shot a hole in the Col.'s floor with a .45 at the change of the OOD. Lcpl Revere, Remember driving the M-37 trucks all over Okinawa, Remember a typhoon hitting Oki and staying in the barracks for a couple of days. Of course Bar Pink and Henoko Village. Big Shot was the call sign of the field excersizes we went on. I think I joined 7th comm the day after they moved from Hansen to Schwab. I remember spending one day at Hansen then being taken to Schwab. Remember any of this stuff? Bob, Cpl. Lorenz at that time.

Jim,
I was with 7th Comm. from 29 Palms to Vietnam. There are so many names that pop up at the website, but I do not remember many of them. The only thing that could make sense is that many of you came in as I was leaving. From the Tet in 68', I spent all of my time out in the bush. When I finally came back in Feb of 68' my orders to go home had come in, so I didn't get to see who took over my job in Supply. My MOS was 3041 but to a Marine, it doesn't mean that's where you'll always be. I was glad to serve with 7th Comm and have many good memories of it.
I can't make it to this years reunion as that time slot has been alloted to other people here at work. This is the closest area where I can finally make the reunion and I can't make it. Hope there'll be more opportunities for me.
Semper Fi!

Budda, You are 'Vietnam-ERA' ... We still had guys in the unit that came up with it from down south. Cpl Villanueava, Schwartz ... 'Frodo' (actually he came to us from 5th Comm with Larry Childs). I got to Okinawa in 70 ... we split the line, one for down south one for Okinawa ... At first I was in the line for down south headed for 7th Comm ... Someone realized that 7th Comm RR Plt had redeployed to Okinawa and I was sent to the other line. I reported to Camp Hansen and checked in ... I don't even think all of the equipment had made it bacjk from in country at that point. I remember a coupleof months later we had the 3rd MarDiv colors ceremony being returned to Oklinawa. Shortly after that we moved to Camp Schwab ... I have pictures of Bob Lorenz during his Typhoon ... and Jimmy Helmezi ..Cpl Fredrickson (spit shined and starched at ALLtimes) I missed the Lt. putting a hole in the floor .... Now THAT'S entertainment.

Hey Cpl Francis, I remember you. Those d**n TRC-27's that seemed to never work very well. Villanueava, big barrel chested guy, there were a couple of other Cpls. or sgts. that came back from RVN but rotated out of Okinawa pretty quick after I arrived. Remember a guy we called "Flames" I think he came back from RVN also. Story was he refueled a gasoline generator while it was running and the fumes caught fire and he got lit up too. This happened in RVN or before we got to Okinawa. I remember one time L/cpl Stone and I took a MRC-62 out on a training shot and the M-37 truck had a bad battery, for some reason we never got Comm up and we were on that hill for an extra day or two until at payday someone noticed we were not back. We had an old MaMa San bringing us cold sodas up everyday by telling her "Tomorrow Toxon GIs come". After we were "rescued" (we were having a good time) either a Staff NCO or the Warrant officer we had for a while or the LT chewed our, most likely my, ass for a while for taking a truck with a bad battery. I also remember getting I disagree chewed by some Col. for not calling a work detail to attention when a General came by while we were supposed to be cleaning up some diesel generators that had just come up from RN. The night before we had all been out celebrating somebody's birthday and we were still really hung over. I have not touched wine since that night. I think 1970 is when I got to Okinawa too. There was only a a dozen or less guys in RR platoon when I arrived and by the time Fredrickson arrived I only had a couple of months left in Okinawa and by that time the plt. must have been up to 30 or so guys. Seems we stayed in two different barracks, one was down the hill more in the center of Camp Schwab and the other was right next to the gate. I think the barracks by the gate was the second barracks we stayed in. Remember the goat the first Sgt had for a while? The First Sgt used to love to BAAAA at that d**n goat. I think the goat was stolen from the Recon Marines I don't think we had it too long before they came and took it back. You Know I do remember being at a big Colors Ceremony, I forgot that it was in Okinawa. Some place I have a lot of slides and pictures of our stay in Okinawa. I took a lot of pictures when my camera was not in the pawn shop! So Kip what did you do after the USMC? I spent 31 years as a professional firefighter for a city out side of Detroit. I retired about a year and a half ago and now live in northern Michigan. Nice to hear from you. Bob Lorenz bob2484@acegroup.cc

Hey Kip, This morning I went out to the Barn to an old file cabinet and found a Radio Relay Platoon picture from Okinawa 1970. The post mark on the envelope was Dec. 7, 1970. So I assume the picture was taken some weeks earlier as it is a professional portrait type picture and would have taken some time to be printed and returned to us. On the protective cardboard I wrote down all the guy's (36) names and position in the picture. You look exactly as I remembered you! Interesting no officers in the picture. Names: L/cpl Holly, Cpl. Francis, L/cpl. Stone, Cpl. Riddle, L/cpl. Knutson, L/cpl Carlson, L/cpl Shaw, Pvt. Bloom, Cpl. Lorenz, L/Cpl. ortegal , Pvt. schultz, L/Cpl. Schalberg, Cpl. Frederikson, L/Cpl. MacCllean, L/Cpl.Martz, L/Cpl. Onthingy, L/cpl.Rivera, L/cpl.Moncada, L/cpl. Hindman, Cpl. Badeau (Budda), Lcpl Huff, L/cpl Evans, L/cpl Pierce, L/cpl Helmeczi, Pfc. Berschied, L/cpl.Francisco, Cpl. Fausch, Cpl Ostrander, Sgt. Brackett, Ssgt. Cruise, GySgt.Rodgers, Sgt Walters and Cpl. Wilkins.
I also have a couple of pictures of Stone and myself by a CH-46 chopper. On the back of the pictures it says we were on a division CPX and I had a MRC-62 shot and Stone had a TRC 27 shot both of us with the 12 Marines out side of Camp Hansen Okinawa Dec. 1970. I remember getting on the chopper and taking some pictures as the chopper flew around the island. I remember that I was surprised that the crew did not care that I was riding around with them. ;D Bob
There we go!!! Good work!! How much do you need for a reproduction? There seems to be a gap in the 7th Comm coverage on the web site ... and we are it .. Eveans, Wilkins, Ostrander and Sgt Walters were the last RVN dudes we had ....

Hi Mike,
I'm back again. I have to ask you guys if you have any record of some things that happened at 7th Comm. during the year between 1967 and 1968. Maybe somebody could shed some light onto what happened there that night. I remember it well, but a name (again) slips my mind, and I'm just wondering what happened after that, whether it was months or years later. I will explain. It happened while at DaNang. I was on duty at the Supply Warehouse that night. If you remember, the gate where patrols went in and out was only about 25 feet/yards away. A patrol came back that night and some VC/NVA sackers got in with them. I heard that they even killed the guys in the bunker that night. They sachel charged 13 hooches that night. A guy that was on duty that night, heard the commotion and awoke everyone in all the hooches but forgot his own rifle. When he went back in for it, that's when the hooch blew up and killed him. I would like to find out what his name is. On the 4th of July, my mind went back to that day in the Nam and I couldn't remember his name for the life of me. I was also wondering if anyone knows if this guy ever got the Congressional Medal of Honor. He saved all those guys in Comm. Co. and from Radio Relay (I believe). I thought there must have been close to 75 or 100 guys that he saved. If anyone was there or remembers that night, please write back and let me know. As close as I was to the gate, you'd think I would have been one to get it too, but I didn't. Also, I believe they also sacked two medical hooches as well. Maybe the total hooches sacked was 13 in total. I just remember that number.
Thanks and Semper Fi to all,
Ben Babij

I think the night you are talking about was Jan 30,1968. I have a copy of the offical investigation about what happened that night. If you want a copy email me at MFINK@ec.rr.com The name of the guy who died that night was Frank Cox. There are many different versions of what happened and what he did or didn't do.

Hi Mike, I never responded to your last email but I wanted to thank you and for giving me the name of that guy who got killed. Yes, I would like to have a copy of that report sent to me, when you have the time. I just can't believe that there have become so many interpretations of that incident.

I was assigned with LCpl Berscheid, LCpl Salvucci, and Pvt Brown in the Generator section. And I remember the Cpl. who was Egyptian. I was only at Camp Schwab for a month or 2 before the big move to Camp Hansen right by the north gate in 1971. Kin ville was much better than Henoko! That summer of 1971 at Hansen we were in a 3 day barracks lockdown for a typhoon. We in the generator section set up gensets by Battalion HQ, and in between Company barracks, and strung safety ropes so that we could service them during the storm. I remember Cpl Pearson in the Company office, and the hated SSgt Setlock. Capt. Hunt was the CO. Others were Ferne, Laslo, Wilson, Margraf, Hunn, Green, Russell, Stamp, McNally, Goodwin, Boyajin, and Race.
