Seeking any info on 1-30-68 when a jeep was ambushed in Nam-O village and 4 Marines were KIA. After doing alot of researching of those fine Marines that were KIA that day (27) in Quan Nam Prov, I have located 4 that may have been involved. One is LCpl Francis P Cox, who is listed on your Memorial Page on this site. The other 3 were all listed as Comm Co, H&S BN/1stMARIV. Pfc. Richard J Clementz, SSgt. Alford T Dwyer, and LCpl Patrick J McKiunley. I am aware that the 5th and 7th Comm Marines worked together and went back and forth with each Battalion. These 4 Heros may have been from a grunt unit, but dont think they would have been in a jeep. If any of these names are familiar or if anyone has any info about this incident E-mail me at smfishbaugh@mikrotec.com or thru my web site (FLC) at mikefishbaugh.homestead.com/ I have 3 very touching photos of this incident and would like to get them to the proper unit Semper Fi Mike

This may help--I don't know. I was with the Construction Platoon, Radio Relay and Construction Co., 7th Comm from Jan '66 through Nov '67. 7th Comm often had Marines assigned TAD to Comm Co, H & S BN/1st MarDiv. I and a few other Marines were assigned TAD to Comm Co., H & S BN from Sep '66 until the 7th Comm Bn moved to DaNang and I was familiar with other 7th Commers that were either assigned TAD or transfered to the 1st MarDiv switchboard that was operated and maintained by Comm Co., H & S BN. It sounds like LCpl Cox was assigned TAD and the after action report of the ambush that you will want was produced by Comm Co. H & S BN. Semper Fi, I.D. Williams

Mike--I was there when LCpl Francis Cox was KIA. It was on hill 34 on the first night of TET in the 7th Comm compound. About 2:00 am we were hit by a sapper unit of vc that had crawled in under the wire. They were throwing satchel charges into the hooches. They had supporting fire from outside the perimeter, RPGs as well as automatic weapons. The report was that Frank Cox was in this hooch and took a direct hit from an RPG and was killed instantly. We killed one attacker as he was coming out of our hooch after blowing it up. One of our own patrols that was just coming in killed 3 of the vc just outside the wire.
Thats what I recall about that night. If I can help you any more let me know. Semper Fi, John
