I think 5th and 7th Comm Bns merged for a while about 68-69 at China Beach. I was with Radio Battalion and remember seeing a painted sign in front of their Bn Hq while I was enroute for R&R and had my mind on other things. Does anyone have a patch or photo of the '57' Comm Bn at china beach . . . . . or am I having a senior moment? Any history on it? 5th and 7th COMM were combined during the early summer of 69. I was in HQ,S-2, of 5th COMM. Came over after the fragging incident and several marines were reassigned. 7th COMM was sent back to Okie in the OCT/NOV 69 timeframe.Marines from both groups were selected usually by time in country as to who left and who stayed. I was transferred to 7th and helped with the logistics of moving men and gear to Okie.We left by LST'S from Da Nang and went to Okie.As usual there was a SNAFU,they didn't know we were coming and we circled the island for a few days while they made room for us.

I was with the original group who landed in Nam in 1965. I can remember that in about March or April 1966 we were told to remark our radio jeeps with the 5th Comm Bn markings. We used the original shield and changed 7th to 5th.

When I got into country in Mar. 67 7th Comm was at Chu Lai. They moved up to Da Nang later that year. I left country in Nov. 68 and 7th Comm's jeeps and trucks and all other equipment still had 7th Comm insigna's on them.

I came in country in mid-Sept '69 and was assigned to 7th Bn RR Co. Both BNs were at China Beach. By the begining of Oct I was out at the An Hoa 2/11 shot. While there we got the word on 7th pulling out and were transfered to 5th Comm Spt (I think).

SBronson did you fly over or float? I went over in May of 65 with about forty other people. I worked in the CommCntr when it was in those old French buildings near Dogpatch at Danang. Then I went to work at 1st MAW Commcntr and 5th CommBn sometime late in 65. My pic is in the photog section on this site.

I got to Danang about May 8th or 9th of '69 and 7th Comm was already at China Beach with 5th Comm. I worked in the S-4 office in front of the Chapel. Sure would like to hear from some of you guys who have been quiet for so long. Take care and Semper Fi to all my brothers.
